Welcome to my site
I made this site to share something about myself and to design something cool under 10 kB while preserving accessibility. I tested this design in Firefox, Chromium and Links (text-based) while also testing readability from my phone. If this page is difficult to read please reach out to me so I can improve it.
I initially wanted to use no CSS as a challenge while having this same design. But you would need to use obscure table properties, use elements they were not designed for, and make use of deprecated HTML. So I was on the fence, but ended up deciding to limit myself to 10 CSS declarations.
Who am I?
My name is Frank Vos (he/him). Professionally I have around seven years of work experience in Systems Engineering. Initially in operations, but primarily in development. I am also a university student learning cyber security. I love software and want to conduct research in performance optimisation, integrity and security.
Personally I am naturally curious, pragmatic and stubbornly optimistic. Lately I've been learning graphics programming using Vulkan and SDL. When I want to relax I enjoy playing games like RPGs, base-builders or competitive titles. When I'm not behind my computer I can usually be found on the tennis court, or the clubhouse beside it. I also enjoy drawing, though I mostly have been doing that digitally in recent years.
My setup
My home server is an Intel NUC12, AMD64 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1240P, total of 16 threads (heterogeneous), 64 GB of RAM, single NVMe drive. I run a lightweight distro named Gentoo on it and use systemd and docker to manage my system and run services. All of these configurations are replicated remotely to reduce RTO/RPO. I chose this little machine because it's quiet and draws under 10 W idle, while also being able to compile a kernel in under 5 min. The kernel has only a few modules, most of what I need is built in and lots of things are deliberately stripped.
My desktop is an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, RTX 5080, 64 GB RAM powerhouse. It can compile and render so quickly it's awesome, though it does draw a lot of power. I have Gentoo as my OS. I used to run dwm as my window manager but moved to GNOME in 2025.
My router is a Protectli Vault (4-Port). Running Gentoo (you may start to see a pattern). It's heavily customized but primarily it runs nftables to do most of the work. Other details are omitted for security reasons.
My views on licencing, privacy, and freedom
This is a humble opinion I'm actively forming. Around a decade back I didn't care much for privacy and only started becoming more cognisant after becoming friends with a few "privacy freaks". So I too stripped my system of any non-free software including the firmware. However I did that mainly to check it out rather than stick to it. I can be happy using a non-free product or service if there is no viable alternative. I encourage the use of free software that respects privacy and license my software accordingly. In addition to that, I hope research including my own can be made available under similar terms. Though for the most part the current economic environment does not incentivize that yet; until then I won't abstain from writing or using closed source or non-free material.
